Unofficial Official Neighborhood Artist-in-Residence.
The project began in May of 2011 in response to what I found in my neighborhood (or a slightly expanded idea of that) which encompassed the Phillips neighborhoods in South Minneapolis. The bulk of the activities took place over the summer and through September. There were multiple strategies I employed during this time, exploring and using surplus spaces, creating tools to elicit conversation and presenting myself to the neighborhoods as a resource. Another guiding principle was the artist as instigator, problem-poser and solver, and as a person who highlights the abilities of others. The materials, mediums and skills are already in the community, my job was to bring them to light.
Peter Haakon Thompson is a fiscal year 2011 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible in part by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Below are some images from some of the summer's various activities from Teach me Your Language in the neighborhood to my Art Shanty set up in my front yard.
