Teach Me Your Language
Wood, paint, chalk
2008

Ongoing project utilizing sandwich board sign with painted words “Teach Me Your Language” and upper portion consisting of chalkboards. Sign is placed in public area, sidewalk, empty lot, outside temporary artist space (West Bank Shop) and artist waits for voluntary ‘language teachers’; has been used solely in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Project grew out of artist’s realization that he was often around Somalis (in the University/ Cedar-Riverside neighborhood and his home) but did not know how to say anything in Somali.

Newer iteration of sign allows for participants to teach each other in multiple languages simultaneously.
