Flag Services-- free flags for empty flagpoles
I will rove about South Minneapolis, starting in Powderhorn, as a flag maker/explorer/documentarian locating empty flagpoles, connecting with their owners in conversation, creating flags for them and sharing what I discover. It is meant to create a situation that allows me to have conversations with people I don’t normally get to talk to and make what are essentially flag portraits. I plan to locate and create flags for 15 neighbors and their empty flagpoles. A hoisting ceremony of all the flags will take place as a celebration and opportunity to see the flags at once. After that flags will be dispersed to their respective flagpole galleries.
Note: Due to the difficulty in making contact with the owners of flag poles, I am opening up this opportunity to people without flagpoles who want to meet and have me make them a flag.
My name is Peter Thompson and I am an artist in this neighborhood (16th Ave near 35th). I am getting in touch because you have a vacant flagpole in your front yard. I am doing an art project this summer to sew flags for empty flagpoles. Really it gives me an excuse to meet some neighbors and sew free flag portraits for them.
What I propose:
•We set up a time to meet and have a conversation
•I go back to my studio to design and sew a flag that is a portrait of you/your family.
•If needed-I do some maintenance (free!) on your flagpole, new rope etc.
•If you can—attend the flag raising ceremony on September 27th.
•Mid October—I hoist your flag on your flagpole and its yours to keep
Of course, you probably don't know me and are thinking—this is weird! So here are some community references, people that know me and have worked with me—feel free to get in touch with them!
